WXPN Launches Major Music Awards Program

Bookmark and Share

Long recognized as an incubator for nurturing talented emerging musicians, 88.5 WXPN, the member-supported radio station of the University of Pennsylvania, is launching its own brand of music honors called the "XPN AWARD." WXPN will present Irish singer songwriter Damien Rice with the first XPN AWARD for an Emerging Artist on July 20 during the WXPN Singer Songwriter Weekend.

The goal of the XPN AWARD for an Emerging Artist is to recognize up-and- coming performers who have produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. It also underscores the station's commitment to serving and showcasing the best new artists, and exposing members to XPN's special blend of musical diversity.

"Over the years, we've given talented singer songwriters much needed airplay for their music," said Bruce Warren, program director of WXPN. "We've also worked very hard to give our listeners something they really value - a first look at artists who we believe may have a huge influence on the music scene," he said.

Rice's debut album "O" was released in 2002 and is now at double platinum status in Ireland. He also received three nominations in the Meteor Ireland Music Awards, and has been recognized in the Hot Press Reader's Poll for the "Best Album" as well as placing top five for "Best Male Singer," "Best Live Act," "Best Songwriter" and "Best Single." In the United States, Rice played at the CMJ Festival, the prestigious Sundance Festival, and at sold-out concerts in Los Angeles.

WXPN will help introduce Damien Rice to the U.S. with ongoing promotions that are part of the award benefits. Rice will be among the featured performers at the WXPN Singer Songwriter Weekend, July 19 and 20 at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. All XPN CD of the Month Club members will receive a copy of "O" as the July featured album. David Dye, host of the nationally-acclaimed World Cafe will interview Rice for an upcoming segment. Additional details will be announced at the award ceremony.

"One of the amazing talents of the WXPN programming staff is their ability to identify those musical artists who will someday have a profound impact on their generation," said Roger LaMay, general manager of WXPN. "From David Gray and Dave Matthews to Norah Jones and John Mayer, XPN has helped so many great performers by providing a platform for their musical expression. Damien Rice is wonderfully talented and it's appropriate that he be the first to receive XPN support in such a formalized way."

WXPN proclaimed Damien Rice the XPN AWARD winner during its on-air announcement of the Singer Songwriter Weekend event that will be held at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing on July 19th and 20th. Performers will include:

-- Art Garfunkel, Maia Sharp and Buddy Monlock
-- They Might Be Giants
-- Robert Randolph and the Family Band
-- Damien Rice
-- Indigenous
-- Rhett Miller
-- Alexi Murdoch
-- Eastmountainsouth
-- Grey Eye Glances
-- Sharon Katz and Peace Train
-- Townhall

Details of the complete Singer Songwriter Weekend program will be announced in the coming weeks.

88.5 WXPN is the non-commercial public radio service of the University of Pennsylvania and the premier public radio showcase for new music by the foremost recording artists of the singer/songwriter era. WXPN's signature program, World Cafe broadcasts daily on more than 150 public radio stations nationwide, and serves as a microcosm of the station's programming culture. World Cafe is distributed by Public Radio International and features a rich eclectic blend of contemporary rock, folk, alternative country, rhythm and blues, world beat and jazz. WXPN also produces Kids Corner, hosted by Peabody Award winner, Kathy O'Connell, and presents major musical events such as the annual Singer Songwriter Weekend.
