IT Industry Execs Support RIAA Efforts To Protect Music On-Line
June 25, 2003 -- Executives from the leading IT industry associations today issued the following statements in support of the Recording Industry Association of America's private enforcement actions: Statement by Robert Holleyman, President and CEO Business Software Alliance (BSA) "P2P is an impressive technology and nothing should make us lose sight of its potential. Yet, there are illegal uses of this technology that necessitate actions such as the strategy announced today by the RIAA. BSA supports RIAA's ability to protect their members' works online. The strategy announced today is consistent with the joint principles announced in January by the IT and music industries where we agreed that private and government enforcement actions against infringers is critical to stemming the growth of piracy. "Using P2P technology to share unauthorized works, unfortunately, clouds the legal advantages of this technology. BSA continues to believe that piracy on P2P networks is an unacceptable, illegal use of a very good technology." Statement by Ken Kay, Executive Director Computer Systems Policy Project "Sharing information over peer-to-peer networks has transformed the way we do business and communicate with one another. Further development of this exciting technology and its potential uses will help drive us into the next phase of the Networked World. Unfortunately, there are those who are abusing P2P tools to steal intellectual property and digital content. "The companies of the Computer Systems Policy Project support the protection of intellectual property. We are currently engaged in discussions with the content communities to determine ways to combat piracy in the future, which include greater consumer education and legal enforcement efforts. The RIAA's strategy of private enforcement action to protect its artists' content online is consistent with the principles agreed to by our industries earlier this year."
