RHAPSODY Streams More Than 11 Million On-Demand Songs To Subscribers In June

Bookmark and Share

SAN FRANCISCO- July 1, 2003 - Listen.com today announced that it streamed more than 11 million on-demand songs to RHAPSODY subscribers in June, a rate of more than 350,000 songs per day. This news, which represents an important benchmark in the service's continuing growth, demonstrates that RHAPSODY is quickly becoming one of the Web's leading providers of paid music content.

Today's news comes one month after Listen.com launched a new distribution relationship with RealNetworks, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), which began offering the popular service to its customers as RealOne RHAPSODY, and joined RHAPSODY's network of distributors in introducing new 79-cent CD burn pricing, the lowest per-song price available to U.S. consumers through any of the new generation of legitimate digital music services.

Since that time, there has been a significant increase in the number of consumers signing up for RHAPSODY and corresponding growth in consumers' use of the critically acclaimed service. In the past four weeks, RHAPSODY has seen a nearly 100% increase in subscribers' CD burning activity and a 45% increase in on-demand streaming. These increases underscore consumers' growing interest in legal online music services like RHAPSODY, and demonstrate the appeal of combining unlimited listening and low cost CD burning through a single service.

"In the past 30 days, RHAPSODY has seen its strongest growth ever, driven by the successful launch of RealOne RHAPSODY and new 79-cent CD burn pricing," said Sean Ryan, chief executive officer of Listen.com. "We look forward to continuing to grow the RHAPSODY business in the second half of the year, reaching new customers with new features that make RHAPSODY even more useful for music fans everywhere."

In the past month, subscribers have streamed more than 88% of RHAPSODY's library of more than 345,000 songs, reflecting the diverse tastes of RHAPSODY's audience and their enthusiasm for the service's unlimited listening approach. A RHAPSODY subscription gives music enthusiasts the freedom to seek out and enjoy a broad variety of music, paying a flat $9.95 monthly fee for all-you-can-eat access to the world's largest library of major and independent label music. RHAPSODY's catalog includes more than 25,000 albums of music from all five major music companies and more than 160 of the world's most prominent independent labels. RHAPSODY subscribers take full advantage of RHAPSODY, listening to hundreds of songs each month for one low price.

"The range of music played by RHAPSODY subscribers in the one month since RealNetworks began shipping RealOne RHAPSODY shows the advantage that unlimited access subscription services have in introducing consumers to new music, versus limited catalog, buy-only download stores," said Richard Wolpert, Chief Strategy Officer, RealNetworks, Inc.

RHAPSODY's Top 10 artists in June include acts currently at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, as well as other musicians that are consistently popular with subscribers. In June, the Top 10 most popular artists in RHAPSODY were: Eminem, Jack Johnson, Coldplay, 50 Cent (whose Get Rich or Die Tryin' album is currently #6 on the Billboard 200), Norah Jones (whose album Come Away with Me is currently #7 on the Billboard 200), U2, R. Kelly, Elton John, and Bob Dylan.

In addition to unlimited access to RHAPSODY's extensive library, subscribers can burn full albums or custom mix CDs, build their own Internet radio stations, listen to professionally-programmed stations, and browse extensive music information and editorial recommendations. Earlier this month, PC World honored RHAPSODY with a 2003 World Class Award for "Best Streaming Audio Service" in its respected World Class Awards, which honor the best in computers, hardware, software, and the Internet.
