Premier Press Provides Hackers A Dream Guide To TiVo

Premier Press, an imprint of Course Technology, the worldwide leader in computer education products and services and part of the Thomson Corporation, the world's largest provider of corporate and professional learning solutions, today announces one of their upcoming titles, Hacking the TiVo, which is releasing into bookstores throughout the country in late July. This book fits into the continued efforts of Premier Press to publish books that enable enthusiasts to enhance their consumer technology experience. Written by William von Hagen, a well-known expert on Linux systems, such as the TiVo, and an established author of computer books specifically on the topic of Linux, Hacking the TiVo and its accompanying CD will provide a central, readable, and detailed guide to upgrading, maintaining, and enhancing TiVo systems. The large audience, composed of TiVo owners, Linux users, and owners of television and video repair stores, now has a single, reliable source for such a vast amount of information. Not only does it provide the benefit of upgrading their systems, but the book also teaches readers how to save money, turning their hacks into a cost-effective venture.

Customers will immediately see the substantial return on their investment with the $29.99 purchase price of this book. For example, because TiVos are actually computer systems running dedicated applications under the Linux operating systems, their recording capacity can be upgraded and they can be backed up against failure. Specifically, if a user wants to increase the recording and playback capacity of a 40-hour TiVo to over 150 hours, they can purchase both the book and a hard drive for a combined cost of $80.00, and they can install and configure their TiVo using the procedures von Hagen has outlined. This is a huge difference in cost compared to what TiVo offers: a TiVo with a recording capacity of 40 hours currently lists at $249.00 directly from TiVo, and the 80-hour model lists at $349.00. The fun doesn't end there--TiVo users can purchase larger hard drives and follow the procedures in this book to upgrade the storage capacity of their unit to levels far higher than anything currently available in any commercial TiVo unit. These savings coupled with the author's expertise in this subject matter are a surefire way to turn the TiVo owner into a successful TiVo hacker.

Included with the purchase of this book is a CD packed with a variety of tools for both Series 1 and Series 2 TiVos. Configured with a kernel and software for both series, the CD is loaded with pre-packaged sets of Linux utilities for Series 1 and Series 2 TiVos, utilities for backing up and restoring TiVo disks, utilities for creating and blessing new disks for the TiVo, and popular TiVo-side server add-ins.

The TiVo, which is a Digital Video Recorder that enables users to record broadcast television to a hard drive, continues to grow in popularity. "Today's hectic and fast-paced lifestyles make it difficult for people to watch television in traditional ways," says von Hagen. "TiVos give control back to the viewer by combining a smart entertainment appliance and a powerful computer system in a single box."

A Linux fan since 1993, William von Hagen has established himself as a writer/author, Linux/UNIX systems administrator, computer collector, and software developer. In addition to Hacking the TiVo, von Hagen is the author of SGML for Dummies, Linux Filesystems, Installing Red Hat Linux 7, and is the co-author of Mac OS X Power Users Guide (1-932841-44-6) from Premier Press. He has written a number of articles and reviews for Linux Magazine, Linux Format in the UK, LinuxPlanet, and LinuxToday, many pieces for MacTech Magazine, pieces on Linux and general computing for Corel, and many reviews of Macintosh and PC Shareware and Demo software for CMP Media. Starting in 1982 as a UNIX system administrator and continuing from there, he has used almost every commercial UNIX and Linux distribution.
