Jay Michaels' 2006 Review

The Year in Rhythm and Blue

[Vegas Buzz News - Music Buzz - January 11, 2007] Jay Michaels has sent us the following:

2006 Year in Review - a personal note from Jay Michaels, host "Rewind the Rhythm" (www.rewindtherhythm.com).

Wow, hard to believe another year is almost behind us and what a great year it was for me starting our program Rewind the Rhythm and it being so well received in the Bahamas and across the globe on the World Wide Web!

My only sadness as this year comes to a close is that for all the great things that happened this year, the music industry lost some of the true "founding fathers" of popular music.

2006 was the year we said goodbye to the "Godfather of Soul" (actually a much limited title) James Brown, who sadly left us on Christmas Day. It was James who gave the heart and soul to people like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Prince, Michael Jackson and so many others. He was more than just a "soulful singer of songs" he was a man who lived the rhythm each and every day of his life.

We will also miss Desmond Dekker. Here is a man who gave us "island rhythms" long before America discovered Reggae or Caribbean Music. Again, and sadly, you hear people today constantly talking about the music of the Islands but many will stop and pay tribute to the people that introduced that music to the U.S. and the world so many years ago. Desmond Dekker will always be remembered thanks to shows like Rewind the Rhythm.

And finally, and this is not to reflect on others who left us in the music industry, this past year, but I am just writing about these three people; last but not least, the man known as the "fifth Beatle," Billy Preston.

My heart was so full of joy when old friend and musical icon, Sam Moore, had Billy featured on his latest album, "Overnight Sensational." In fact Sam introduces Billy and gives him the lead on the hit song "You are so Beautiful." Many don't realize it was Billy Preston who wrote the song; Joe Cocker sang it and it became a super hit! We are so proud that Billy's version with Sam is up for a Grammy Nomination for the 2007 awards show.

They are gone but not forgotten and we know that the choirs of heaven are blessed with the incomparable sounds of these talented individuals.
From our family to yours keep music in your hearts and rhythm in your soul throughout the coming year!

Health and prosperity in 2007 for all of us! -- Jay Michaels

ABOUT REWIND THE RHYTHM: Rewind the Rhythm is the brainchild of media maestro Jay Michaels, and recently celebrated its 100th show. The show features deep cuts into the catalogs of classic RnB, Soul and RnB/Soul-influenced rock artists, with a focus on Philly Soul, the Motown Sound, and Rhythm and Blues artists not heard anywhere else. The show is unique in that it has a caribbean flavor and pays tribute to the many artists throughout that region, including the Bahamas, that contributed so richly to the modern music scene. The show currently airs on a short list of syndication stations including Love 97 FM, Bahamas, and may be heard live thrice weekly on the World Wide Web.
