Tame Impala Among BestNewBands.com's 2012 Newbie Awards Winners
BESTNEWBANDS.COM ANNOUNCES WINNERS
OF ITS INAUGURAL NEWBIE AWARDS
(Los Angeles) December 18, 2012—BestNewBands.com, a top destination for reviews, interviews and information about the world’s best emerging recording artists, has announced the winners of its first annual Newbie Awards, as selected by a combination of the site’s editorial staff and fan voting. The winners:
Best New Band: Tame Impala
Best New Male Artist: Gary Clark, Jr.
Best New Female Artist: Ellie Goulding
Best New Album: Frank Ocean channel ORANGE
Best New Song: Passion Pit “Take A Walk”
Australian psychedelic rock band Tame Impala topped several acts that had more commercial success this year to earn Best New Band honors. The group (guitarist and lead singer Kevin Parker, percussionist and bass player Dom Simper and drummer Jay Watson) enjoyed critical success in 2012 with their CD Lonerism and incessant touring. They’ll be returning to the US in 2013 for headlining tour dates starting in February.
Blues-rock guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. had a phenomenal 2012 with rave reviews for his Blak & Blu CD (which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Albums chart) and his live appearances. The Austin, Tex. native finished the year with a flourish, joining the Rolling Stones on-stage during their recent Barclays Center (Brooklyn, NY) performance, playing guitar on a version of “I’m Goin’ Down.”
British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding added an interesting event to her resume last year: performing live at the request of the future king and queen of England. So how did she top that in 2012? Her brilliant CD, Halcyon, featured a well-received single, “Anything Could Happen,” and a reissue of her earlier overseas hit, “Lights,” reached the upper echelon of the pop charts. She’ll return to the States in January-February for a major market tour, followed by a slew of European dates.
Just 24, Frank Ocean had the kind of success in 2012 that most artists can only dream about. He was the musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. He received rave notices for his headlining tour and various festival appearances. His first full-length release, the brilliant R&B-funk CD, channel ORANGE, entered the Billboard Albums chart at #2. And oh yeah, his six Grammy noms including Album, Record (for “Thinkin Bout You”) and Best New Artist, were tied for the most of any artist this year.
Cambridge, Mass., home to Harvard University, can now also be known as home of indie band, Passion Pit. The band’s five members, all of whom attended Boston area music schools, had a breakthrough this year with “Take A Walk,” from their second album, Gossamer. The single’s success was spurred partly by its use in a Taco Bell commercial, and ultimately led to an appearance on SNL in October. Coming in February: a headlining date at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.
In making the announcement, BestNewBands.com’s Los Angeles-based Founder and Publisher, Tom Crosthwaite said: “We’re thrilled to honor these five artists for their contributions in the studio and on the road during the past year. We look forward to chronicling their growth in 2013 and beyond.”
Greg Brodsky, BestNewBands.com’s Chief Marketing Officer, and creator of the site’s Newbie Awards said: “As a former label marketing executive, I’m proud that BestNewBands.com has helped champion deserving, emerging talent. We strive everyday to become a must-visit content aggregator for new music fans while offering marketers a great destination to reach our target audience of 18-34 year-olds.”
Daniel Kohn, BestNewBands.com’s Editor said: “The voting in each category was amazingly close, which demonstrates the breadth of talent that emerged this year. Congrats to all and a big ‘thank you’ to the publicists who introduced us to many great acts and invited our team to see some great live performances this year.”
