SOUL/BLUES/ROCK BLEND CD CHOSEN BY THE BLUES FOUNDATION AS 2013 BEST SELF-PRODUCED CD AWARD FINALIST, ESTABLISHES DAVE WIDOW AS A LEADER IN NEW BLUES
The Blues Foundation announced ‘Waiting For The World To End’ by Dave Widow of the Ventura County Blues Society as one of five finalists chosen from approximately eighty submissions from blues societies around the globe.
Widow wrote or co-wrote all 14 tracks on the CD which features special guest Bill Champlin formerly of Chicago as well as bandmates of Bonnie, Taj, Jimi, Etta, B.B., Keb, Van, CS&N and more.
A typically humble yet elated Widow explains his love, respect and gratitude for the blues. “Of course I am honored to be chosen…but I have to admit I was a little concerned my sound might not be quite traditional enough for an industry award on a global scale. It reinforces my belief that blues is ethereal, not structural. I like the way there is room for a lot of lateral movement within the context of playing it, and all of the latitude within, to explore, and the impromptu ways you can interpret it.” He continues “If you asked me three words to describe my music, Id’ say funky, soulful and backbeat.”
‘The Line Up’ consists of L.A.’s most noteworthy and well-recorded musicians. Music Connection wrote "Their masterful musicianship and deep understanding of the blues is a major draw, but the humble nature of each outrageously skilled player is what gives this group's music its genuine soul.”
The Line Up features Bill Champlin (from The Sons of…), the incomparable blues legend Mike Finnigan and Barry Goldberg (songs recorded by Rod Stewart, Bobby Blue Bland, Gladys Knight, Joe Cocker and whose own album was produced by Bob Dylan). Gary Mallaber (Steve Miller, Van Morrison) and James Gadson (Albert King, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, Paul McCartney) handle drums. Reggie McBride (B.B. King, Elton John, Keb Mo’) handles bass and David Morgan (Ricky Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band) adds piano.
Since 2005 The Blues Foundation has celebrated up and coming artists by bestowing an annual award for the "Best Self-Produced CD" of the year. It is a nascent and exciting award to complement the thirty-three and twenty-nine years of the Blues Music Awards (BMAs) and International Blues Challenge (IBCs) respectively.
