SUPER INSTRUCTOR TO ROCK HARLEM PRIDE FESTIVAL!
SUPER INSTRUCTOR TO ROCK HARLEM PRIDE FESTIVAL!
New York City has a new superhero, but you won't find this action jock fighting crime in the days of future past or turning up the dark on Broadway. This guardian angel does his work in the gym exercise studio.
LOOK! UP ON THE TREADMILL,
IT'S FITNESS MAN!
Fitness Man, whose real name is Anthony Truly, is a veteran instructor for New York Sport Clubs and cardio trainer for The Women's Rugby Team at Columbia University. He is dubbed on his website "NYC funniest fitness instructor". Fitness Man teaches his popular "Super Shred", weight training class and "Power Jam", cardio class at various NYSC locations in Manhattan. He instruct his classes dressed in a shimming red body suit, silver cape, weight belt, gloves, winged Adidas sneakers and whited out contact lenses all to promote his new online comic strip, “The Fabulous Adventures of Fitness Man” and His up and coming performance at Harlem Pride Celebration . Fitness Man says, "We have supermodels, why not a super instructor? If a superhero can be on Broadway,
why not the fitness studio? It's all about making going to the gym fun".
And fun it is! On any given day, loyal devotees rush to get a spot in his "Power Jam" class. Fitness Man takes 50 plus students through a grueling fast paced aerobic dance routine. The athletic group moves in unison at 150 bpm to popular dance songs he remixes himself. He also throws in the surprise superhero theme songs from the Batman, Spider Man and Wonder Woman TV series. Breathing through big smiles, his clients jump, kick and spin with glee. Fitness Man continues, "I want to motivate my crowd with humor and theater. I created this character because everyone can relate to superheroes. Every superhero story is about discovering your powers and gifts and deciding if you're going to use your powers for good or evil. I often tell my class: Now that you're super fit, be kind to average looking people".
Fitness Man's unique approach to fitness, mixing result oriented exercises with entertainment, comes easy for him because of his background. Before he was Fitness Man, he was a dancer for the Tennessee Ballet and Beale Street Dance Theater in his home town of Memphis. He has been a dancer and choreographer for Isaac Hayes, Luther Vandross and Rufus Thomas. Upon moving to New York he quickly became a celebrity trainer to the stars, working with icons like Olympic Gold ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi and Super Model Racheal Hunter.
Fitness Man is also a seasoned stand- up comedian who has done sold out shows at Stand- Up New York and Boston Comedy Club. He incorporates a comic commentary in his "Super Shred" weight class, which he describes as "The View" with weights because, while his clients are huffing and puffing during their exercises, he offers them celebrity gossip, gay humor and Cosmo quizzes. Fitness Man recently warned, "Every time you don't finish a repetition, a poor little kitten dies". Then he holds up a picture of a cute but sad looking kitten. The crowd erupts into laughter while completing their workout.
To legitimize his superhero character, he put the comic strip on his website. In the comic strips Fitness Man's arch enemies are hypertension, obesity and sweet tooth which are actual colorful characters with special powers of their own. The comic strip is a clever, entertaining and informative story that makes you want to work out. Fitness Man says, "Dressing up for class and producing a comic strip is a bit of work; but I do it because it works. Every day I see people who never worked out before and in just three weeks they are keeping up with the group and displaying significant physical changes in their body". Lance Levine from the Upper East Side says, "I lost 10lbs in this class. I appreciate this class because it target muscles that I don’t get in other classes and I always leave feeling like I’ve gotten a great and thorough workout. He brings amazing and fun energy that you can’t find anywhere else.”
Fitness Man also has his own organization, Concerned Citizens for a Healthier Society. The CCHS current initiative is collecting signatures on a petition to urge New York area movie theatres to add healthier food choices at their concession counters. Fitness man says, “Our research shows that people would like to see yogurt, fruit cups, organic popcorn and dried fruit when they go to the theatre”. You can sign the petition online at his web site funnyfitness.net.
Meanwhile, Fitness Man will make his citywide debut performance at this year’s Harlem Pride Day 2014 Celebration. On Saturday June 28th Fitness Man will siege the stage at Jackie Robinson Park in B movie fashion with his clients as back up dancers to warm up the crowd for Harlem Pride’s 5th Anniversary Celebration. Harlem Pride board member, Michael Hodge says, “Fitness Man is perfect for this event because our goal is to provide opportunities for networking and communication among LGBT and SGL community members. A superhero appeals to the whole family”. Fitness Man jokes,” Your objective for this mission is to bring all your friends to Harlem Pride so we can get the whole city moving. Good luck. This article will self-destruct in 5 seconds”.
